More Than Property: A Sacred Invocation for the Fields

Honoring the Land, the Creatures, and Our Role as Stewards

Walking as a Steward, Not an Owner

There’s a quiet truth I’ve carried for years, one that shaped how I see the earth beneath my feet:

We don’t own land. We are entrusted with it.

It’s easy to forget this in a world that assigns deeds and property lines, but when you truly begin to walk with nature, you start to feel something deeper. The land has a memory. A pulse. A presence. And when we slow down and listen, it speaks.

This morning, I mowed the lawn around our home for the first time this season—something I hadn’t been able to do until now, as I’ve been healing from hairline fractures in my ribs. Not long after, Eric began preparing to hay the fields—a multi-day process that provides nourishment for animals and helps keep the land healthy. But before the first machine moved through the tall grass, I felt a tug in my chest. A need to pause. To honor what was about to shift.

Because those fields aren’t just fields. They’re home.

To birds nesting in tall grasses.
To rabbits hiding from hawks.
To insects, to fawns, to bees and unseen beings who tend to the Earth’s quiet ecosystems.

I didn’t want to just “get it done.” I wanted to move with intention. So I sat down and wrote the invocation below. I spoke it aloud with reverence before Eric began, and I share it now with you—not as a ritual to copy, but as an invitation to remember your own sacred relationship with the land you touch.

Invocation for Haying the Fields

To honor the Earth and protect its creatures over time

Beloved Archangel Ariel,

Guardian of the wild and sacred steward of Earth’s abundance,
I call upon you now—
Not just for this moment, but for the days to come.

Today, Eric begins the haying of our fields—
An act of partnership with the rhythms of the land,
A gathering of nourishment, a tending of cycles.

To the spirit of this land,
To the elementals, devas, and guardians who dwell in these grasses—
I honor your presence. I thank you for your care.

With humility and respect,
We ask that all creatures—those burrowed beneath,
those hidden in tall grass, those who nest or roam—
be gently guided to safety.
Let them feel the shift in energy before the machines arrive.
Let them be nudged by your whisperings to safer places,
And return when the earth is still again.

We call for a blanket of grace to cover this work,

So that what is harvested may be done in harmony,
Without harm, without sorrow,
Rooted in gratitude and mutual respect.

May Eric be supported with strength, clarity, and care.
May the equipment run smoothly, the weather align,
And the land breathe with ease through it all.

For the next three, four days—
And for as long as the haying continues—
I anchor this prayer in the soil, in the sky, and in the heart of the Earth.

We walk as caretakers, not owners.
We move with reverence, not control.
And we offer thanks for all that grows, gives, and guides.

And so it is.

This wasn’t just a spiritual moment. It was a lived one.

As I walked barefoot afterward, I felt a lightness in the field. A gentleness, even in the places where the mower had passed. It reminded me that when we treat the land as a living presence—not a resource—we participate in healing. Not just for the Earth, but for ourselves.

This blog is called Be the Light, but today, I felt the land return that light to me. A partnership of presence.

May we all remember the sacred responsibility of being here.
